At the Movies– Maleficent hits BIG on Opening Day

The Angelina Jolie-led Disney fantasy tale “Maleficent” looks to be headed towards a stellar $70 million opening weekend. I will admit this film didn’t appeal to me in the trailer and previews but going by this box office I just may have to check it out.

The $180 million-budget epic tale pulled in just over $24 million on Friday, the highest opening weekend for a Jolie film, almost exactly that of “Oz The Great and Powerful” last year. Reviews for “Maleficent” have been mixed.

It’s fairing better than Seth MacFarlane’s comedy “A Million Ways to Die in the West” which also scored poor reviews from the critics. Universal’s R-rated western comedy scored $6 million on Friday and is heading towards a $16 million or so opening – less than half the $49 million opening Universal had with “Neighbors” earlier this month, and the $54 million that MacFarlane’s “Ted” opened to in 2012.

Fox’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past” fell considerably to $9.4 million on Friday, and is looking likely to have a $31 million second weekend.

Given that this is a Jolie film I think it will fair well both domestically and Internationally regardless of what the critics says.
