No Help for Grandma!!

On February 26th, 87 year old Lorraine Bayless passed away in the dining room of the Glenwood Gardens senior living facility. Beside her a worker at the facility watched her take her last breath without doing much, but calling 911. When paramedics reached the women she was not breathing and had no pulse.

Before an ambulance arrived, Bakersfield fire dispatcher Tracey Halvorson for several minutes begged the staff member to begin CPR, saying something had to be done before an ambulance arrived because the woman was not breathing enough, according to the tape.

After many refusals from the staff member, the dispatcher then asked to please find someone who will help. She even went as far to say “EMS will take all liability for this, just help”. Finally Halvorson asked the staff member if she was going to let the woman die, the staff member said, “That’s why we’re calling 911.”

Christopher Finn, a spokesman for Brookdale Senior Living, which owns Glenwood Gardens released the following statement:The staff member was “serving in the capacity of a resident services director, not as a nurse, Glenwood Gardens “is an independent living facility, which by law is not licensed to provide medical care to any of its residents,”

Jeffrey Toomer, the executive director of Glenwood Gardens, said the staff member followed the facility’s policies. “In the event of a health emergency at this independent living community, our practice is to immediately call emergency personnel for assistance and to wait with the individual needing attention until such personnel arrives,” Toomer said in a statement.
“That is the protocol we followed,” he said. “As with any incident involving a resident, we will conduct a thorough internal review of this matter.”

(This is the Elderly Community response to Living Facilities)

We pay these senior living facilities for one thing! PEACE OF MIND. When our loved ones get up there in age and need to be watched over 24/7 we pay these facilities to provide that. I doubt Miss Bayless family knew that the staff did not administer CPR to patients. The sad part is we can’t blame it on the facilities, they are just protecting themselves from us. There have been thousands upon thousands of cases where family member have sued these living facilities for stupid things.

A 97 year old Grandmother gets a broken lung from receiving CPR that saved her life and now her son is suing because her lung got broken. These things happen all the time, it has become such a lucrative business for people scheming. That the only way they could fight back was to keep all hands off and wait for paramedics. So at the end of the day,  what are you really paying for with these facilities: 3 hots and a cot from what it looks like to me!

Do you think the Facility should be held accountable?
Or did they do the right then?
