Objectionable Behavior

Hello people.  I know, I know, it’s been a long time.  I have had to deal with a thing or two.  Now I’m back and I will be here about 3 times a week.  1 article about a “serious” topic. 1 article about somebody’s ratchet behavior(*which my friend Tonya thinks came from wretched…I tend to agree now that I think about it*) and 1 tech related article.  Now back to our regularly scheduled program…

Rutgers University is in the news again.  In 2007 it was Don Imus calling the women’s basketball team “a bunch of nappy headed hoe’s”.  In 2010, Tyler Clementi committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge because his roommate, Dharun Ravi, videotaped him kissing another guy and streamed it live for all the Rutgers students to see.  And now we have this: Men’s basketball coach, Mike Rice, was videotaped, over a three year period, pretty much going H.A.M. on his players.  In the video he can be seen hurling balls at players, grabbing and shoving them, swearing at them like a sailor and just hurling insults, some “homophobic”, like there’s no tomorrow.

Former NBA player Eric Murdock was director of development for Rutgers and the man behind creating the video.  He turned the video into Rutgers athletic director Tom Pernetti.  His contract was not renewed at the end of the season.  Mike Rice was suspended for 3 games in November and fined $50,000.  ESPN’s show Outside The Lines did a show about the video yesterday and AD Pernetti has been making the rounds trying to clean this whole mess up.

Rice and Pernetti

I know it’s tough coaching kids and trying to get them to do what you need to do to be successful. It’s even tougher when you aren’t getting the top recruits to come to your school. On top of all that, college athletics is big business and there’s no bigger business in the college basketball world than a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Rutgers has been struggling in recruiting blue chip players from NYC and NJ areas and they can’t get a name to come from anywhere else. I get all of that…but damn homie, you ain’t have to do all that! I am a believer in putting hands and feet on kids but as a coach at a school of higher learning there has to be a line. I do believe in being tough because the world is tough and most of the kids coming out today are being coddled by parents who want to be their children’s friends and not their parents. I have heard quite a few people call into radio shows this morning in support of coach Rice. I wasn’t one of them and here is why. When I saw that video, I saw a person with issues with self control. I saw a person who would rather be right than be happy. I saw a bully. I saw my mother.

rutgers-to-head

You can’t abuse your authority over anyone, especially a kid. And because most of those players are on scholarship, he has a lot of authority over them. I was good with some of the pushing. He wants a player in a certain spot or to perform a certain move. The throwing of the ball at the kids head was out of line. You don’t throw things at a kid, he’s not some stray in the streets. I was cool with the swearing…to a point. Once he went to the faggots and cunts, he messed up. If my Sheldon came to me and said a teacher or coach swore at him, I’d want to know what happened. What did he do. If he came to me and said the teacher or coach called him a faggot, there’s nothing to talk about, I’d be at that school ASAP and we would be having a conversation about somethings.

On a side note: Is faggot the new nigger? Over the last couple of years I’ve heard nigger being used on cable tv. Old episodes of All in the Family have Archie Bunker saying nigger and spic likes it’s ok. Kobe was fined $100,000 for calling a ref a faggot. If you have ever watched an NBA game on tv, you can lip read all that is being said by players like Lebron, Kobe and especially Kevin Garnett. You will see them saying nigga like they are on a southern plantation and nobody says a word. But you better not ever, ever ever ever say faggot…ok?

Update: Mike Rice has been fired as coach of the Rutgers men’s basketball team this morning. I guess better late than never.
