RUMOR: Dr. Who Showrunner Steven Moffat Directing Star Wars: Episode XI?

Disney has been assigning Star Wars directing jobs left and right.

A couple weeks ago, everyone more or less thought J.J. Abrams had the reigns for the whole franchise. Then Gareth Edwards (director of this summer’s Godzilla) got a Star Wars spin-off. Then Josh Trank (director of next summer’s Fantastic Four) got a Star Wars spin-off. Then Rian Johnson (director of many Breaking Bad episodes) got the job for Star Wars: Episode VIII.

But right now, nobody knows who’s got the job for Episode IX.

Star Wars

According to a new rumor from Jedi News, Dr. Who showrunner Steven Moffat may be the one placed in charge of the one director-less Star Wars film.

Now, bear in mind that this is just a rumor. But Moffat has his ties to Star Wars. A few years ago, another Dr. Who writer, Russell T. Davies, was offered a job on Star Wars: Underworld, a TV show that ended up trapped forever in development hell.

Moffat, meanwhile, has his own ties to George Lucas and Kathleen Kennedy, as he was writer on Steven Spielberg‘s The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. And it’s a decent guess to say Spielberg knows Lucas and Kennedy fairly well.

We’ll see what that means for the future- eventually, Disney’s going to have to give this movie a director.
