Sex Tape Debuts at a Disappointing Fourth Place

Despite widespread press coverage, “Sex Tape” failed to bring in big numbers at the box office this weekend. The romantic comedy starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel went unnoticed at the theaters, while “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” was number one for the second week in a row.

Box Office Loss

Though the trailers were everywhere and the stars were all over the talk show map, “Sex Tape” earned just $15 million over the weekend. Since the film’s estimated budget was $40 million and the promotion alone probably topped the $15 million mark, this is not good.

Disney’s “Planes: Fire & Rescue” was in third place at the box office with $18 million. “The Purge Anarchy” earned $28 million in the number two spot, and “Rise” earned an impressive $36 million.

Sony, who distributed the flick, is hoping to make a bigger haul in the international box office. “Sex Tape” has a star-studded cast and plenty of marketing power, but didn’t get a lot of praise from critics. Action, horror and animation all trumped the romantic comedy over the weekend.
