Another Original Trilogy Character May Return to Star Wars: Episode VII- In a Very Spoilery Way

One day, we’ll have news about Star Wars: Episode VII that isn’t a hodgepodge of unconfirmed rumors, “script leaks” and he-said, she-said.

Not today, though: here’s your latest helping of unconfirmed Star Wars rumor hooplah.

At least this week’s edition is a good’n, as Latino Review claims to have a substantial spoiler for the next year’s new Star Wars film. Their sources indicate that an old character might return for a new role.

And that character would be…

(Stop reading if you don’t want any spoilers to spoil you)

(Seriously)

(It’s your last chance- turn away now)

(Okay, you asked for it)

PalpyEmperor Palpatine!

Here’s what Latino Review said, in greater detail.

“Two independent sources have recently written to us to confirm something we had heard back when production first began. Even though Star Wars: Episode VII (as well as the following two sequels) will feature its share of new villains, the person pulling the strings, the real puppet master, the big bad of the trilogy is none other than Emperor Palpatine.”

They go on to state that J.J. Abrams has covered his tracks from the spoiler hunters by casting someone else as Palpy- no Ian McDiarmid this time around.

Now, it’s all very likely that throwing an ancient and evil space wizard down a random shaft might not necessarily kill him. And given that previous Star Wars spoiler reports claimed that the film’s villain would be a pastiche of human and robot parts, this could all fit together nicely.

Palpatine as the secret final boss would be a clever way to tie us back to the original trilogy (along with, obviously, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford). But so much of Palpatine is tied to McDiarmid’s performance. If the Emperor speaks, and he doesn’t sound like this:

Is he still the Emperor? One of those “tree falls in the forest” things, I guess.

Hopefully Abrams and company can pull off their own version of Palpy. If, of course, the rumor’s actually true. Which for all we know, it’s not.

That’s Star Wars for you.
