Stretching is already a natural instinct, people stretch as soon as they wake up and they will naturally stretch after long periods of inactivity. When stretching for exercise you will need to elongate a muscle or a muscle group to the full length that the muscle will go. When stretching is done repeatedly, overtime your body will become more flexible and you will find that you are able to workout for longer periods of time before reaching exhaustion. Stretching has also been proven to reduce lower back pain, when the buttock, hamstrings, and hips are repeatedly stretched it takes the pressure off of the lower back.
