Drew Brees Breaks Johnny Unitas 52 Year Old Record: 48 Games in a row with TD

The New Orleans Saints began this season under intense pressure and have fallen short of living up to expectation thus far. On Sunday Night they got just what they needed with a first win over the San Diego Chargers– Drew Brees’s former team as he breaks Johnny Unitas 52 year old record.

For one moment in time last night the entire Saints organization and fan base “the who dat” nation could celebrate and feel like winners again. In the aftermath of the bounty scandal and sanctions the Saints have lost their first 4 football contest of the 2012 season. Last night all that was washed a way for a night as Drew Brees broke  Johnny Unitas’s 52 year old record of going 47 games with at least 1 TD pass.

Brees even had enough clout with the commissioner Roger Goodell to get him to allow the Saints suspended head coach Sean Payton, assistant head coach Joe Vitt and general manager Mickey Loomis — all serving various suspensions in connection with the NFL’s bounty investigation — to attend the game. They and Unitas’ son, Joe, saw Brees pass for 370 yards, enough to put Brees over 30,000 yards in his 100th game as a Saint.

Afterward, Brees took an elevator near the Saints’ locker room up to the Superdome’s suite level to share a few moments with Payton, Loomis and Vitt.

“It gave us a good mojo for sure,” Brees said of Payton’s presence. “I love my coach, so glad he could be here. Mickey and Joe Vitt as well. It is special for our team, special they could be a part of this record.”

In the 1st quarter Brees throws a 40 yard TD pass to Devery Henderson to break the record. The amazing thing about this record it is truly marks “consistency”– this is a record that spans 4 seasons. And if anyone intends to capture it they must really be on their A game for quite some time.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell tweeted Drew shortly after the record was broken and congratulated him and the New Orleans Saints organization.

After the TD pass Brees ran to the end zone to hug and celebrate with wide receiver Devery Henderson as the crowd screamed and hollowed “Dreeeeeeew”. The rest of the offense came and swarmed him in celebration and the Superdome went wild. The pass capped off an 80 yard drive that saw Brees complete all of his 3rd down passes.

Devery Henderson and Marques Colston both really shined tonight; Henderson caught 8 receptions for 123 yards and 1TD, Colston caught 9 catches for 131 yards and 3TD’s.

Devery Henderson catches the record breaking 40 yard TD beating the Chargers cornerback Quentin Jammer on a double move in the 1st quarter.

Wide receiver Marques Colston hauls in 3 Td’s on the San Diego Chargers last night in the New Orleans Superdome as the Saints went on to defeat the Chargers 31-24.

Vitt is expected to take over the coaching staff when his six-game suspension ends. Loomis was docked eight games. As the Saints headed into their bye week, the desperately needed win offered hope, however faint, of making a run for a fourth-straight playoff appearance when Vitt and Loomis are back. The New Orleans Saints can celebrate for now because they have the record and a win which they needed. They still have 11 games remaining and are looking up to Atlanta who is 5-0 and leading the division.
