Ice Age 4: Continental Drift….Film Review by Emperor Cole

I recently was able to get to the theater to enjoy Ice Age 4: Continental Drift. Now I must admit I have not seen any other the previous 3 films so it put me in a space where I didn’t have any past reference material to compare it to. I can say though that the film is right on track for a kids movie that a younger audience would enjoy.

This animated film has a large cast of well known actors doing voice overs to bring it to life. It stars Ray Romano, Denis Leary, John Leguizamo and Jennifer Lopez. As I family of Woolly Mammoths  and their friends are separated by the continents shifting and land breaking apart. Part of the group ends up out in ocean on a chunk of ice while the rest remain at home or at least what is left of home. The daughter in the family voiced by Keke Palmer is going through the stage in her life where she has become interested in “boys”. And of course the father just isn’t having it.

There are several moments where the father (Ray Romano) shows up and embarrasses her in front of the “in crowd” that she so desperately wants to be a part of. One of such said in crowd mammoths is voice by hip hop star Nicki Manaj.  And even worse the mammoth that she has a huge crush on- Ethan voice by hip hop star Drake- is there to witness these moments.

While stuck out in the ocean the father mammoth and his sabre tooth companion and the bunch encounter a rag tag crew of pirates lead by the devious monkey Captain Guts. The whined up getting into a confrontation that makes them enemies all while trying to find their was back home. Does anyone else notice a some what similar them to Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted? And no movie is complete with the standard developing love story. In this case it takes place between two Sabre-Toothed tigers voiced by Jennifer Lopez and Denis Leary. The dilemma they face is that one is with the good group and the other is with the band of pirates lead by Captain Guts.

The movie was entertaining on a kid friendly level but I must say I found myself nearly dozing off to sleep on two occasions not because it was boring but because I am not part of the target demographic. In certain animated films the humor is more “riska” and has an adult spin at times as was the case in Shrek and many other films but this is NOT one of the movies at all. Ice Age 4 is aimed at children and truly catered to children with no sneaky crude humor of sexual innuendos. For this I applaud directors Steve Martino and Mike Thurmeier.

Ice Age for is a must see if you have young children and want to be able to hold on to that innocence for as long as you can- much like Ray Romano’s mammoth character. This is really for kids and has several moments that they will enjoy and laugh out loud at. I recommend it.
