With all the usual hype around the big game the are a few storylines that are always lost or forgotten along the way. This year’s most forgotten player without a doubt will be the now back quarterback for San Francisco Alex Smith. Colin Kaepernick is being praised as the 2nd coming of Joe Montana or Tom Brady and a Superbowl win would give that impression– but one can’t help but wonder– Is Alex Smith hoping the Ravens win…
No matter how this Superbowl plays out 2 things are certain– this is Ray Lewis’s final game and this is Alex Smith’s final game– well as a 49er. Colin Kaepernick was given the starting job by the head coach Jim Harbaugh earlier this season when Smith went down with an injury. He was only scheduled to miss 1 game…. well so much for that.
Alex Smith was actually planning well and leading the league in completion percentage when he got bench in favor of Kaepernick so it’s even tougher to completely understand why Harbaugh felt the switch needed to be made. Smith can run and is mobile– not as much as Kaepernick but he’s no slouch in that department. If you don’t believe see the game last year in the divisional playoff where he ran for the long touchdown agains the New Orleans Saints.
Kaepernick could earn all the hype take his place as “the next big thing” with a Superbowl win, so in his head and heart– why wouldn’t Alex Smith want to see him fail? Why should he cheer for the guy who got his job? Why should he want this young guy to get a ring? He didn’t spend years on the 49ers when they were horrible and didn’t win very many games. He didn’t go through the struggles of the rebuilding franchise so why should he get all the glory?
Alex Smith endure TONS of turmoil and had a new offensive coordinator almost every other year in San Francisco and just when the team is settled and going to be a contender for the next 5-8 seasons…… HIS STARTING JOB IS TAKEN FROM HIM.
Alex Smith will be traded or cut within a month and this is a fact– so would he be wrong to hope the Ravens win? Is Alex Smith secretly hoping for a RAVEN SUPERBOWL WIN?
This years Supebowl will be remember as either the Colin Kaepernick Superbowl win or Ray Lewis’s great Superbowl Win…. Alex Smith won’t be remember at all.
