The story of Jimi Hendrix is the classic rock star fable: sex, drugs, and rock and roll.  The thing that sets Jimi apart was his ability to pervade white culture despite being a black musician (and his amazing ability to “shred” on a guitar). When it was announced that John Ridley, writer of Undercover Brother and 12 Years a Slave would be heading up the project as both writer and director expectations were high.  The first trailer for Jimi: All is by My Side dropped yesterday. You can check it out below.

You may notice that the trailer, despite being a film about a famed musician, has surprisingly little music.  Even with the short guitar riff, there is no actual Hendrix music featured. The filmmakers did not get the rights and so the entire film will be Hendrix music free, set before he became famous.  Whether or not this will work we will find out when the movie opens September 26th.

The film did premiere earlier this year at the Toronto International Film Festival where the rights were quickly bought up.

Are you excited to see Jimi: All is by My Side? What do you think of the trailer?
