Paramount is betting big on the next Terminator film, Terminator Genisys. The movie opens just under a year from now, and yet Paramount is so sure that it’ll be a Denny’s Grand Slam of a success that they’ve already announced two sequels. As opposed to a Moon over My Hammy of a success, a grim fate to be avoided by all.
The Hollywood Reporter has the news, announcing the sequel dates and their working titles. Here’s what they’ve got:
Terminator 2: May 19, 2017
Terminator 3: June 29, 2018.
As is to be expected from the tight spacing between those dates (running sequels back-to-back is hard work), the next two Terminators will be filming at the same time, claims THR.
And all of this comes with a fairly large caveat- if Terminator Genisys bombs, all Paramount’s sequel plans go kaput. Which, if you recall, happened the last time a Terminator pic was in theaters:
“If we have good fortune we have indeed planned out two more ‘Terminator’ pictures… There’s an arc of story [in the new sequels].”
That’s what McG told MTV just after directing the 2009 Terminator: Salvation. As you can guess, his fortune fell a little below “good.”
It might seem like this franchise is long past restarting, but there’s always hope. If Paramount can rekindle a fire under Schwarzenegger’s aged robot behind, I’m sure we’d all celebrate another Terminator that actually does justice to the first two.
