The Amazing Spider-Man Franchise May Be Circling the Drain

Things were looking so good for The Amazing Spider-Man this spring. Hype was building (oh, was it ever building) for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and Sony was loudly shoving all its chips to the center of the franchise pot. After the second TASM film would come Venom and The Sinister Six. And also The Amazing Spider-Man 3, of course.

How could anything go wrong?

Besides, of course, anything and everything to do with the Rhino

Things started to tip in the wrong direction after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 underperformed at the box office. Things started out great, with the film ticking upwards of $90M in its opening weekend, but every weekend after that saw Spidey in free-fall (probably due to bad word of mouth, which in turn was due to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 not being very good).

Now, things are much, much worse. In the spring it was announced that Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who co-wrote the second TASM movie, would also co-write part three. Except that now they aren’t- first, Kurtzman and Orci broke up as writing partners, and then Orci relayed the following to IGN:

“I don’t know what their plans are for that franchise. I don’t ever want to say never, but we have to figure out what their scheduling is in terms of when they want each movie. I’ve read probably as much as anyone else.”

So the guy who’s supposed to be writing The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is now in as much darkness as you or I.

And then a mere two days ago, famed movie scooper El Mayimbe tweeted the following:

“RIP SINISTER SIX”

Which he then refused to comment on or even mention after the fact.

Spider Man is confusedSo while all this is extremely vague and backed up by as much hard evidence as Sasquatch or the Mole People (note: the Mole People, currently living in between my couch cushions, send their regards), things aren’t looking so great for Spidey and his Sony overlords.

But just look on the bright side. If Sony fails, Marvel Studios can finally snap up Spider-Man and put him in The Avengers. And at that point, world peace is pretty much guaranteed.
