Skull Island is kind of an odd idea- a King Kong prequel that no one particularly wanted, but would probably see if given a free afternoon. Giant apes, people.
But now Skull Island has been given a substantial boost- Tom Hiddleston, best known for his proud horns and devilish demeanor as Loki in so many Marvel movies, is in talks to star as whomever the film’s ape-averse hero may be.
Also, Skull Island picked up a director- Jordan Vogt-Roberts- who’s also working on a Metal Gear Solid movie, although Skull Island is more likely to come first.
Legendary Pictures announced the news themselves, in a press release (courtesy of Slash Film) that outlines all the many wonderful reasons why Hiddleston and Vogt-Roberts are a perfect fit for giant ape cinema, and so forth.
But the most important thing here is that Hiddleston = star power. The guy’s already Loki, but Loki alone does not carry a film. Typically, you need a hero. And now with Skull Island, Hiddleston can also be that hero.
But here’s the part we’re all thinking of… if Legendary (a studio with the rights to both King Kong and Godzilla) decides to do King Kong vs Godzilla, does that mean Hiddleston would star?
Because that would be a beautiful thing.
