What Debate?

Hello again Mindbender fans, it’s good to be back. I took a couple weeks off to collect my thoughts and get ready for the upcoming debates. My excitement level was extremely high for this first debate, and after the interview of the wives on CNN my excitement level only got higher.

However, after an hour and a half I was still looking for a debate. What I saw last night was Mitt Romney on his A game and Barack Obama just going through the motions. Romney came ready to debate, whereas Obama came to speak to the American people as if he were giving the State of the Union Address. Now if you were a blind person and could only listen to the debate you may have liked what you heard from the President. He laid out ways to lower the deficit and gave good concrete examples, such as ending the wars in the middle east, not giving the military money they didn’t ask for, and cutting subsidies for gas and oil companies that are already making money hand over fist. Romney on the other hand, gave little detail about what steps he would take. He gave an outline of what he would like to do but would not divulge how he would go about doing it, unless you count his plan to cut spending for PBS. Also, he would ask himself “is it important enough to borrow money from china and if not, the program gets cut”. Since only low income families are the ones that watch PBS (because they can’t afford cable), I can only imagine what other “entitlements” he would cut off.

I believe Barack did himself a disservice by just standing there and taking all the criticism that was being heaped on him. Romney is the one that came out punching and Obama was the sparring partner that was not allowed to hit back for fear that he may hurt the prize fighter before the big fight. I’m not sure what was wrong with the President, maybe he was upset over missing some of the extracurricular activities he and Michelle could be engaging in on their anniversary. Or, maybe he was exhausted from running a campaign and running the country at the same time. It could also be that he under estimated Romney and felt like he would walk through this debate, no problem, ala Mike Tyson v. Buster Douglas, and we all know how that turned out for the champ.  It takes two to debate and whatever the reason for the subpar performance, I was disappointed in the President  and can only hope that in the next two debates he will get back to being the energetic, sharp, witty, knowledgeable, aggressive man that made the stage his own.

I will be back next week to talk about the VP debate, and I’m almost positive Joe Biden will bring the heat!
