Ghostbusters Could Be Building Its Own Marvel-Style Universe

I think I speak for all peoples when I say this:

“We do not need a Ghostbusters expanded universe.”

Heck, we barely even need a new Ghostbusters film, even though everyone seems so adamant on putting one out. Yet “expanded universe” (think the Marvel Cinematic Universe or that Spider-Man conglomerate Sony’s working on) is the item of the day for Ghostbusters.

Click past this Slimer to get the full scoop.

SlimerThe news of a Ghostbusters Cinematic Universe comes by way of The Hollywood Reporter, which in turn comes by way of Dan Akroyd. Here’s what Akroyd told the publication:

“It’s beyond just another sequel, a prequel, another TV show. I’m thinking what does the whole brand mean to Sony? What does Pixar and Star Wars mean to Disney? What does Marvel mean to Fox?”

Later, Aykroyd added that Ghostbusters is “not just another movie or another TV show, but what’s the totality of it? The whole mythology from the beginning of their lives, the end of their lives. Ghostbusters at nine years old, Ghostbusters in high school.”

Granted, these may just be the musings of a Ghostbusters-crazed actor, but Akyroyd has long been involved with a Ghostbusters sequel, so his word has a lot more weight than, say, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s on the matter.

But let’s be frank here. All this hoopla is not necessary. Aykroyd wants to put out a third Ghostbusters; sure, we’d all appreciate another go-round. Aykroyd wants Ghostbusters in theaters every year, Ghostbusters on TV, Ghostbusters on our lunch boxes, radios, books and skywritten in the clouds at all times?

Might not be necessary.

More Slimer would be nice, though.
