Valentine’s Day, the day that people profess and share their love with one another. As I sit at my desk and gaze upon all the balloons and flowers and candy that the women in my office are receiving, I can’t help but ask myself, “Self, why are these dudes breaking the bank for a day that means absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things?” Am I supposed to buy crap that will get thrown away in a day or two, just because society says I should? If I don’t get my significant other anything on this day, does that mean I don’t love or care for her? I THINK NOT!
I refuse to buy into these stupid notions that there is a day more important than any other, that I should show love with candy and gifts to the one I love. Also, when did this day turn into a day exclusively for women? (I know there are some exceptions). Men are criticized as bad mates if they don’t get their girl anything, but if a woman doesn’t get her man anything nothing is said, can you say “double standard”. I know some of you out there may think I’m cheap, mean, heartless, or just hating, but I am neither of those things. I am a rational, loving, kind, man that does not need society to tell me what day I should shower my woman with love and gifts. I do my best to make sure my woman feels loved and appreciated 365 days a year, not just on 2/14. If I choose to skip all the overpriced flowers, dinners, and cards on this day, I don’t expect backlash from my girl, friends, or family. If you cherish the people in your life all year, then Valentine’s Day is just another day on the calendar and should be treated as such.
Valentine’s, a retailers dream, as they laugh all the way to the bank with your hard earned dollars for a day that doesn’t make sense!
